Periodontal Disease<\/strong> is a chronic disease of the hinge apparatus of the teeth that affects the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth. Experts estimate that periodontal disease affects up to half of the population over the age of 30, with the risk of developing the disease increasing with age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the reasons why periodontal disease is so dangerous is that in the early stages it is often painless and patients do not realise that their teeth are at risk. In more advanced stages, however, it can lead to serious complications, including tooth loss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does periodontitis arise?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Periodontitis begins with inflammation of the gums, professionally called Gingivitis<\/strong>which is caused by the accumulation of coating (plaque<\/strong>) on the teeth. Dental plaque contains bacteria that accumulate on the surface of the teeth and gums when there is a lack of hygiene. These bacteria produce acids that irritate the gums and cause inflammation. If this inflammation is left untreated, it can go into a chronic form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, bone loss occurs around the roots of the teeth, causing them to loosen and eventually fall out. Neglected periodontal disease can affect not only the oral health but also the overall health of the patient, as chronic infections in the oral cavity can contribute to the development of serious systemic diseases such as Diabetes<\/strong> or heart disease<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
