Unlike <strong>supragingival tartar<\/strong>which is located above the gum line and is visible to the naked eye, subgingival calculus forms below the gum line and can cause long-term damage to periodontal tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\"In the early stages, the symptoms are only visible to a specialist.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does subgingival tartar form?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subgingival stone <strong>is emerging<\/strong> <strong>mineralisation of dental plaque<\/strong>which contains bacteria, minerals from saliva and other organic components. If plaque is not removed by regular <a href=\"https:\/\/majdent.sk\/en\/10-tipov-na-zlepsenie-ustnej-hygieny\/\">oral hygiene<\/a> or professional cleaning, it will gradually start <strong>harden<\/strong> and move <strong>below the gum line<\/strong>where it creates an ideal environment for the growth of harmful bacteria. These cause gingivitis (<strong>gingivitis<\/strong>), which can develop into periodontitis or <a href=\"https:\/\/majdent.sk\/en\/may-be-hereditary-periodontitis\/\">periodontal disease<\/a>chronic inflammation leading to bone loss and loosening of teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the patient does not remove the plaque properly, they may push it under their gum when brushing, where it can more easily attach. It doesn't settle as quickly on smooth enamel, but under the gum, where the tooth surface is rougher and cleaning more difficult, it mineralises much more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is a subgingival stone dangerous?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is hard to find and completely invisible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subgingival calculus is not freely visible and cannot be removed by normal household hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Promotes inflammation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irritates the gums and causes them <strong>Redness<\/strong>, <strong>swelling<\/strong> and <strong>Bleeding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It leads to bone tissue loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;If left untreated, it can cause bone loss and weakening of the teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It can affect overall health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chronic inflammation caused by bacteria in the subgingival stone may be related to <strong>heart diseases<\/strong>, <strong>diabetes<\/strong> and other systemic diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/majdent.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/subgingivalny-kamen-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/majdent.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/subgingivalny-kamen-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/majdent.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/subgingivalny-kamen-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/majdent.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/subgingivalny-kamen-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/majdent.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/subgingivalny-kamen-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/majdent.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/subgingivalny-kamen.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How is it diagnosed and removed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Majdent clinic experts diagnose the presence of subgingival calculus early by probing periodontal pouches and <a href=\"https:\/\/majdent.sk\/en\/services\/rontgenological-examinations\/\">X-ray examination<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, removal is possible <strong>only by professional methods<\/strong>such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Kyretage:<\/strong> it is a manual cleaning with a special tool (<strong>cyrette<\/strong>), often performed under local anaesthesia for a painless procedure. Mechanical removal of the stone is followed by disinfection of the affected sites and tissues using solutions such as peroxide.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ultrasonic cleaning (scaling):<\/strong> it is the use of ultrasonic tools to break up and remove the stone. It also involves deep cleaning of the tooth roots to remove plaque and smooth the surface, reducing the risk of plaque re-deposition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prevention of subgingival tartar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best defence is prevention.
